Polyester and polyester-spandex are both widely used in performance apparel, but they behave differently in fit, movement and construction. The better choice depends on the garment and intended activity.
Polyester performance fabrics
Polyester can be knitted into mesh, interlock, birdseye and many other structures. It is durable, quick drying and compatible with sublimation when the fibre and finish are suitable. Standard polyester fabrics are common in team jerseys, training shirts, shorts and fishing apparel where stability and printed colour are important.
What spandex adds
Adding spandex increases stretch and recovery. Polyester-spandex blends are used for leggings, sports bras, rash guards, compression tops and fitted training garments. Stretch can be two-way or four-way depending on the construction, and the percentage alone does not define performance.
Fit and opacity
A fitted garment needs enough recovery to return to shape after movement. Leggings also require opacity under stretch. These qualities depend on knit density, GSM, colour, finishing and pattern fit, not only fibre composition.
Printing and decoration
Many polyester and polyester-spandex fabrics can be sublimated, but heat settings and colour testing should be confirmed. Stretch screen-print inks and suitable transfers may be required for highly elastic products. Heavy decoration can restrict stretch.
Care and testing
Review colourfastness, pilling, snagging, dimensional stability and recovery. Test the actual fabric with the intended decoration and garment construction before bulk production.
Choose by product function
Use stable polyester when structure, breathability and full-colour sublimation are central. Consider polyester-spandex when close fit, mobility and recovery are required. The manufacturer may recommend different weights or knit structures within either category.
