Fabric GSM is one of the first specifications a buyer encounters when developing custom sportswear. GSM means grams per square metre. It measures fabric weight, but it does not independently describe quality, stretch, softness or durability. Two fabrics with the same GSM can perform very differently because fibre composition, yarn, knit structure and finishing also matter.
Common GSM ranges by product
Light performance jerseys commonly sit around 120–160 GSM when breathability and quick drying are priorities. Training shirts and many team uniforms often use 140–180 GSM polyester. Activewear leggings and compression garments usually need denser stretch fabrics, frequently around 220–300 GSM, to provide coverage and recovery. Streetwear T-shirts may use 180–260 GSM cotton jersey, while hoodies and sweatshirts can range from approximately 280–450 GSM depending on season and desired structure.
Weight is not the same as thickness
A brushed fleece can feel thicker than a compact interlock at a similar weight. A tightly knitted fabric may feel smooth and substantial while remaining relatively thin. Buyers should therefore review a physical swatch or sample instead of choosing only from a GSM number.
Match fabric to the use case
For match jerseys, consider moisture movement, breathability, snag resistance and colour reproduction. For leggings, assess stretch direction, opacity, compression and recovery. Outdoor garments may need abrasion resistance, water-repellent finishing or wind protection. Streetwear programmes often prioritise hand feel, drape, wash performance and colour consistency.
What to include in the brief
State the garment type, target climate, intended activity, preferred composition, approximate GSM and any required finish. If you are uncertain, explain the performance result you need and allow the manufacturer to recommend options.
